Emily and Adele Joseph and I were very close for much of our lives.  We went to the same Sunday School, and became even closer in Junior High.  One summer, I believe in 8th grade or going into 9th, the two practiced the piccolo part of "Stars and Stripes Forever."  They were both good musicians.  I hoped they would both get the part when orchestra/band reconvened in the fall.  That's my strongest memory of them, though we remained friends throughout adolescence and into adulthood. Adele's daughter is one of my daughter's oldest friends. Emily and I took a cross-country trip as our high school graduation celebration, and reunited numerous times when we both lived in California.  She was a lovely person, even upbeat when I last spoke with her a few weeks before she passed away - I was planning to bring her some soup.  Sadly, I was unable to attend her memorial, but know that her sendoff was beautiful and musical, just like her life. I think of Em and Adele every time I hear "Stars and Stripes Forever."  The are blessed in my memory.
